In this episode of “Huge Fly Fisherman,” host Ben takes viewers on an epic fly fishing adventure in the Alaskan wilderness. Ben and his friends embark on an exhilarating fishing expedition in pristine nature when they take a float plane to a remote creek to catch beautiful Arctic char. Read on for a recap of their action-packed day.
After unloading gear from the plane, Ben and his friends start hiking up the creek in search of fish. At first, the prospects look bleak after walking a mile with no luck. However, their perseverance pays off when they finally locate a spot filled with eager Arctic char!
What follows next is an adrenaline-filled spree of catching fish after fish on smolt patterns and flies. Despite initial discouragement, the anglers quickly make up for lost time by doubling up on fish simultaneously. Ben mentions the surprise of seeing how incredibly silvery and colorful the Arctic char are.
Among the highlights are Ben’s first ever Arctic char, an accidental catch by his friend Carson, and Craig hooking a fish uniquely in the tongue. After naming multiple fish hilarious names like “Sashimi” and “Charles,” the guys are thrilled with their haul.
Behind the Scenes:
In a concluding fireside chat, Ben reflects on the satisfaction of accomplishing their goal of finding and catching the elusive char. He also shares intriguing anecdotes from the same Alaskan trip about seeing a massive sea lion swimming far upstream and even breaching rapids on the river.
Additionally, Ben discovered unexpected success using a bonefish fly pattern meant for an entirely different species to catch the Arctic char. He plans to reuse the special fly to someday catch actual bonefish on it.
